Hello! I'm Daniel; travel writer extraordinaire. Well, I write guidebooks at least, for Lonely Planet, plus travel articles and travel apps for various companies. I specialise in China, where I live, and India, which I visit regularly, mostly for the excellent wet shaves. I'm also co-host of the television series, Best in China. My app, Beijing on a Budget, is simply outstanding. Download it. You won't be disappointed.
Buy it from iTunes, or from Android Market, or check out the special app section below.
My third consecutive Tour of China for Lonely Planet and my biggest project yet. For this edition I’m covering Beijing, the Great Wall and the Yangzi River as well as the three provinces of Hubei, Sichuan and Chongqing. Due out in May 2013.
This is the first time I will have worked on a major guidebook to my adopted home town, and the first time I will have been the lead author on a Lonely Planet guidebook. I’ll be working alongside experienced travel writer and fellow Beijing resident David Eimer. This one’s due out in April 2013.
This Bangladesh guide is my baby. It will be the first Lonely Planet guidebook I will have written all by myself, and it’s going to be a beauty. My research included two extensive trips to the country, totalling around three months and covering each of the seven divisions of Bangladesh. It’ll hit the shelves some time in December.
My first stab at Singapore for Lonely Planet saw me team up with Shawn Low, a Singaporean author who now lives in Australia. The two of us did the whole book. My sections included the tastiest neighbourhoods of all: Chinatown and Little India. Food Heaven!

This is the first India edition of Lonely Planet’s new Discover series and it was put together by most of the team who worked on the main India guidebook. My colleague Abi Hole did the tiger’s share of the writing, but I carried out the research for much of central India, including the Taj Mahal and the magnificent temples at Khajuraho.

My second stint on this monster of a book. And my second tour of central India. So, back to the tiger parks of Madhya Pradesh (didn’t see any this time – gutted) and to the remote villages of tribal Chhattisgarh. I also compiled the special 3D colour spreads for the Taj Mahal and the temples at Khajuraho.

As part of my work for Lonely Planet on the main India guidebook, I carried out all the research for the Agra chapter of this regional guide. The special 3D colour spread for the Taj Mahal, which I put together for the India book, is also used in this one.

This first-edition China guide for Lonely Planet’s new Discover series was put together by a crack team of authors led by LP’s legendary China travel writer Damian Harper. Damian deserves the credit for most of this book, I must admit, but I researched the sections for Sichuan and Chongqing in a chapter called ‘The Best of the Rest’.

Had a proper old adventure for this edition (my second time on LP’s main China book) as I researched the more remote regions of western China, in Qinghai and Tibetan Sichuan, before descending into the tropical climes of the Sichuan basin to cover the sweaty cities of Chengdu and Chongqing.

I can now say I’ve co-written a book to which the Dalai Lama has contributed. Not bad, eh? His Excellency wrote the inspiring Preface to the book. I wrote the no doubt slightly less inspiring chapters on Eastern Tibet and Tibetan Sichuan, as well as a short essay for the Environment chapter entitled Landscapes in the Land of the Snows.

Just two of us wrote this entire guidebook; myself and my exceedingly talented colleague Christopher Pitts. I wrote the History, Culture, Economy, Sleeping and Excursions chapters as well as an eight-page colour feature on Shanghai architecture.

My first stint on the book some refer to as “the Bible”. I spent two months dodging prepared-to-do-anything-to-be-in-the-India-book hotel managers as I explored steamy central India for the chapters on Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh (where I saw my first-ever wild tiger!) and Chhattisgarh.

My first-ever published guidebook and I’m sure I’ll never enjoy researching another book quite as much; partly because my wife and son joined me for bits of the trip, but mostly because I was just dead chuffed to be working for Lonely Planet. I covered three provinces – Guangxi, Shanxi and Hubei.

I’ve created this app to get people off the usual tourist trail and into the heart of true Beijing. Luckily for those on a budget, that’s the bit that doesn’t cost much money!
Use Beijing on a Budget to:
• eat with the locals using my special menu-decoders
